**Henderson County, Tennessee is situated in the west part of the state, and
contains 780 square miles. The surface is tolerably level; soil, well adapted to grain and to
grass, and the growth of the vine. It is drained by the head waters of Beech River, Big Sandy
River, and of the south fork of Forked Deer River.
Capital, Lexington.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 12,400, sheep 10,538, swine 61,399; wheat 61,502 bushels
produced, Indian corn 495,870, oats 67,917, potatoes 5,602, tobacco 12,000 pounds, cotton
564,576; 14 stores with a capital of $41,000; 6 tanneries, 15 distilleries, 4 potteries, 1
flouring mill, 15 grist mills, 5 saw mills, 2 oil mills. Capital in manufactures, $23,300.
It has 11 schools with 265 scholars.
Population: whites 9,911, slaves 1,954, free colored 10; total, 11,875.
